Pep Guardiola vowed that Manchester City will not stand still in the transfer market despite a raft of new long-term contracts handed out this season.
Joao Cancelo became the latest first-team star to pen fresh terms this week, with 12 of the squad now tied down until at least 2025.
But City, who want to land Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland and are evaluating potential left backs ahead of the summer, will continue to invest.
Pep Guardiola says Manchester City will not stand still in the next transfer market
‘I don’t know what is going to happen but the soul and the heart of the team is still young,’ Guardiola said.
‘To keep it for the next years is so important. You have to have a depth of squad with hunger. The core, the soul of the team has to stay as much as possible.
‘At the same time if the players are unhappy they are not playing, they want more minutes, we have to move. That is normal. Many things are going to happen here until the end of the season.’
Erling Haaland will be one of City’s top priorities in the upcoming summer transfer window
City are also hopeful that Bernardo Silva will commit his future to the club but, while the majority of Guardiola’s squad are signed up for seasons to come, they have decisions to make on Ilkay Gundogan, Gabriel and Riyad Mahrez in the coming months.
All three – as well as Raheem Sterling – are out of contract in 18 months’ time.
Guardiola revealed yesterday that he expects £14million Argentina striker Julian Alvarez, signed from River Plate on deadline day, to link up with the squad in pre-season. The 22-year-old could yet remain in South America until 2023.

‘For the age and the price, for many reasons in the future it is a really, really good deal,’ Guardiola added. ‘He is so dynamic. A guy who has the sense of goal. He has the quality, the movement in behind. He is a street player.
‘The club decided that under [River Plate coach] Marcelo Gallardo – one of the best managers in the world – he is going to double-up again. In pre-season he will join us and we will see what happens.’
