Paulina Porizkova has opened up about the ‘shame’ she felt after being the first contestant voted off Dancing With the Stars in 2007, saying she had a heartbreaking conversation with her driver later that night that put things into perspective.
The supermodel was 41 when she partnered with dancer Alec Mazo on the ABC competition series in 2007, but her time on the show was short-lived. She took to Instagram on Friday to share a video of her performances while reflecting on her experience.
‘Dancing With the Stars changed my life. And that’s not an exaggeration,’ Porizkova, 56, wrote. ‘I was the first one booted off — not because I was the worst dancer, but because I lost the popularity contest. I was so filled with shame and self-pity after the show, all I wanted to do was crawl into a hole.’

Looking back: Paulina Porizkova, 56, took to Instagram on Friday to share a candid post about the ‘shame’ and ‘self-pity’ she felt after being booted off Dancing With the Stars in 2007

Ouch: The model was 41 when she partnered with dancer Alec Mazo on the ABC competition series in 2007, but she ended up being the first contestant eliminated from the show

Porizkova had to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live later that night, and she was admitted she was on the verge of tears when it was finally time for her to go home.
‘I got into the town car hired for me after doing Jimmy Kimmel and just wanted to cry. The driver was an older woman. To distract myself from my misery on the long drive back to my rented LA house, which was now pointless, I began a conversation with her,’ she recalled.
‘We spoke of our children. We both had two. She a girl and a boy. And then she told me this story. She had had a church picnic on a lovely afternoon with her friends and children. After the picnic, she wrapped up her stuff and crossed the road to get to her car. Her little son, seeing his mom leave, left his big sister and followed her.
‘She turned to see him crossing the road, and panicked. She reached out her arms and he ran to her. At the very moment, a truck barreled by. It was the last she saw her little boy alive.’
Porizkova, who has sons Jonathan, 28, and Oliver, 23, with her late husband Ric Ocasek, was so moved by the story that they both ended up crying in the car.

Perspective: Porizkova shared that later that night she struck up a conversation with her driver and learned the older woman had lost her young son in a tragic accident years before

Hard: The mom, who has two sons, said the woman’s heartbreaking story ‘put things into perspective,’ but she also realized that ‘other people’s pain doesn’t lessen your own’

‘That night, I cried all night. Her pain and grief were so much larger and more significant than my little disappointment,’ she explained. ‘Of course it put things into perspective. But I also found out that other people’s pain doesn’t lessen your own, no matter how trivial. Instead, it magnifies it.
‘Maybe this is why we are so reluctant to dip our toes in others’ turbulent waters. We don’t want to drown with them,’ she added. ‘But telling anyone in pain to be grateful for their blessings, is for ourselves. It’s a selfish impulse to make ourselves feel better. [The] bravest thing you can do is to swim along, if only for a little while.’
Porizkova’s emotional post comes one day after she revealed she is working on another book. she shared a video of herself hard at work at her computer on Thursday.
‘Yeah, I am writing a book. That’s exactly what I’m doing,’ she said. ‘For the next few months, I’m going to be really hard at work getting this stuff done. I’m very excited about it, but it’s also a lot of solitary work. So, stay tuned.’
Porizkova’s first novel, a roman à clef titled A Model Summer, was published in 2007. She also wrote the children’s book The Adventures of Ralphie the Roach, which came out in 1992.
